Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant on Thursday came down heavily on the Supreme Court registry, remarking that some of its officers are allegedly working as per their whims.
Stating he will order a deep probe into the registry’s functioning, CJI Kant remarked that such actions continue despite fresh reforms being brought to ensure its smooth functioning.

Giving an example of the concerning situation, the CJI said he was stunned to come across an instance wherein a plea, which had been declined by a three-judge bench, was later listed before another bench.
“I will order a deep probe. There are officials in the Registry who have been here since last 20-30 years. They think we (judges) are all here in transit and they are permanent. Therefore, things must happen the way they want,” the CJI remarked.
Justice Kant said he would see to it that the corrective measures are taken before the end of his tenure.
“If I don’t correct this before I demit office, I would be failing in my duties,” he added.
The CJI’s remarks are being seen as a rap on the SC registry’s administrative functioning, as well as the perceived overreach by certain long-serving officials. Such officials are suspected of circumventing established procedures.
The court has been making efforts to bring in reforms and streamline the registry’s operations in order to ensure efficiency and adherence to judicial protocols.
